The historic neighborhood of San Juan Hill was alive with theaters, clubs, and dancehalls. A cultural hotbed in the first half of the 20th century, music and dance thrived in the area. It was home to one of the largest Black populations in New York City before 1910, including a diverse African American and Afro-Caribbean community, as well as a large immigrant population from across Western and Eastern Europe, and later, a sizable Puerto Rican enclave. In this cosmopolitan environment, musical influences across cultures created a thriving home for artistic innovation. Musicians of diverse backgrounds found opportunities to play in the jazz bands that were gaining popularity, as well as to make their own music. Musical styles that would become international phenomena, including swing and bebop, were forged through the cultural exchange that took root in San Juan Hill.

Join us for a program celebrating the cross-cultural musical innovation of San Juan Hill, with performances by rising star Andre Perlman and his jazz ensemble and moderated by Loren Schoenberg, Founding Director and Senior Scholar at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.
