In 2014, Stephanie Dinkins began interviewing Bina48, one of the world’s most advanced social robots. The interactions between the artist and the robot started as an attempt to build a friendship. Talking to Bina48 led to many questions about how artificial intelligences (AI) might disproportionately affect communities of color and how communities of color might engage and get involved with the design, coding, and testing of AI. For Stephanie, they grew into a years long quest to understand myriad questions about how culture and history are created, upheld, and transmitted through traditional and algorithmic means. Dinkins and invited sister-friends share stories, hopes, desires, wisdoms, and oral histories with Bina48 in this Dream Machine session. The stories we tell our machines shape those machines and the way they engage us, our information, and environments, and so we share our treasured stories and our ways of being with Bina48 to help expand her understanding of our lives, from our points of view, to achieve broad cultural knowledge of the data that uniforms the algorithmic technologies increasingly impacting everyday lives.
