A new neighborhood mural: The Future We Create

By Vanesa Álvarez and Assistant Artist Derval Fairweather

"For the next two years, as Damrosch Park disappears behind construction fencing, something else will rise in its place — not a rendering of what’s to come, but a portrait of who is already here." – Phil O’Brien, W42ndSt

The Future We Create, a newly created temporary construction-fencing mural designed by Vanesa Álvarez and assistant artist Derval Fairweather in collaboration with the public art nonprofit ArtBridge. The mural was developed alongside local community members, including residents of NYCHA’s Amsterdam Houses and Amsterdam Addition, as well as students from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Campus. Over the past few months, community participants shared their ideas and visions with the artists, directly shaping the mural’s themes and design.

This work honors the historical and cultural legacy of the San Juan Hill neighborhood, from past to present — drawing inspiration from historical figures and contemporary artists and community members. Patterns woven through the figures’ garments evoke the beliefs, cultures, and histories that live within them. These were collected through intergenerational workshops with members of the community. Together, these elements form a collective portrait of where the community has been, and a shared imagining of where it is going.
