Multifaceted pianist and composer Aaron Diehl is one of the great contemporary instrumental musicians of his era. Though his primary metier is jazz, Diehl’s creative output transcends genre with a sound that The New York Times calls "elegant... upholding a traditional framework while crisply demolishing usual notions of conservatism." Diehl is both a bandleader and soloist, in addition to his tremendous work in supporting and collaborating with many major artists and ensembles, including Wycliffe Gordon, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Cécile McLorin Salvant. For his headlining debut set at Alice Tully Hall, Diehl presents music by the legendary pianist James P. Johnson—a prodigious musical innovator who pioneered new forms of jazz in San Juan Hill, including what became known as Harlem stride. Fueled by the creative spirit of the neighborhood, his music influenced not only his contemporaries, but generations of jazz musicians. Aaron Diehl is joined by special guest and vocalist Ekep Nkwelle, a force in today's jazz scene, charting a remarkable journey from the vibrant culture of Washington, DC to the iconic stages of New York City and beyond.
